I once nearly killed my anaesthetist.

At 30, during my hip replacement, I had a full-blown panic attack that took three nurses to restrain me.

I thought I was broken. A freak.

Turns out, I was traumatised — by childhood surgeries I barely remembered and a body that had been trying to tell me something for thirty-eight years.

I just hadn't been listening.

What followed was three decades of chaos I couldn't explain — toxic relationships, running from myself across three continents, self-destruction dressed up as adventure — all while looking, from the outside, like someone who had absolutely no idea she was living in survival mode.

Because I didn't.

Scarred & Fabulous is the no-bullshit account of what medical trauma actually does to a person when it goes unrecognised — and what it finally looks like to stop fighting your own body and start coming home to it.

If you've ever felt like a stranger in your skin after surgery — emotionally wrecked even though physically you're "fine" — this book was written for you.

Author Bio

Kim Black is the founder of Scarred & Fabulous — a platform breaking the silence around the long-term emotional fallout of medical trauma in women and children.

A Brit-turned-Kiwi and unwilling expert (the kind earned in hospital wards across four continents), Kim figured out at thirty-four what no doctor had ever told her: surgery can leave scars that don't show up on the skin.

Featured on BBC Radio 5 Live and the Medical Trauma Support Network, she talks honestly about childhood medical trauma, CPTSD, and the hospital anxiety that lasts a lifetime. Through her story, podcast, and online course, she has helped hundreds of survivors connect the dots between their surgical past and their unexplained present.

She believes no child should grow up feeling broken because no one told them their surgery could leave more than just physical scars.

You've survived enough. Isn't it time you became Scarred & Fabulous?

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING...

"What can I say?! Just wow! This book is raw, emotional, funny but so special.

Chapter 6 really spoke to me, actually made me realise something about myself I didn’t realise I do!

I suffered with Hip Dysplasia and had a spiker so firstly, thank you for highlighting it and secondly, well done for turning what sounds like the most horrific experience as a child into something so special."

Ellie Smith- Hip Dysplacia sister

"It's well written and the detail and depth you've gone into really gives you the feels. It feels like I'm reading your diary, which is a good thing for a reader.

Kim's done a wonderful job!"

Faith Isabelle- Client

"This is the most honest book I have ever read. Kim has laid bear all her life, never shying away the truth. In so many places it is

heartrending, disturbing, joyful, desperate and enlightening.

Kim is so expressive, with incredible use of straightforward, clear, emotive language to tell her

story. I couldn’t stop reading and finished this in just two days.".

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a launch team member need to do?

It's simple:

✅Read the book (or as much as you can before launch—life happens, I get it)

✅Leave an honest review on Amazon and/or Goodreads within 2 weeks of launch

✅Share about the book on social media (I'll give you easy copy-paste posts!)

✅Tell one person who needs this book that it exists

That's it. No pressure. No complicated requirements. Just your honest voice helping other women find their way..

Do I have to finish the book before leaving a review?

Not at all. We welcome reviews from any honest place—whether you’ve read the whole book or just a few chapters. A short, thoughtful impression is more than enough to help another reader find this story.

What kind of review are you hoping for?

Subscribe to our newsletter for the latest updates, book releases, and exclusive offers. Follow us on social media to stay connected and receive real-time news.

Why do you need Amazon reviews?

Amazon's algorithm loves early reviews. The more reviews a book gets in the first few weeks, the more it gets recommended to people searching for help.

What is a 'verified purchase,' and why does it matter?

Amazon flags reviews from people who bought the book themselves with a “Verified Purchase” label, which builds more trust with new readers. That’s why we offer a special discounted print version just for launch team members.

Will I be reminded to leave a review?

Yes—but only kindly 😊 You’ll receive a few emails with simple instructions and encouragement. Once you’ve posted your review, just click the “Review Complete” button or email me the link, and we’ll stop the reminders and start the celebration!

Is there a deadline?

Book launches September 2026. I hope to get all launch team copies out by early July, so have at least 3 weeks to read it. We’re aiming to reach 100 reviews by the eBook launch, but you’re welcome to post whenever you’re ready. Earlier reviews help more—but later ones still matter.

What if I change my mind?

No pressure. If you join and later realize it’s not the right time or fit, that’s okay. Just reply to any email and let me know. This is an invitation, not an obligation.
